Last week Game Day Skinz was delighted to sponsor two player and coaching camps in the UK, focusing on both Quarterback and Defensive Skills. The first camp took place at the prestigious Woodbridge School in Suffolk, with the second at Napier University in Edinburgh.
Former BAFCA Convention headline speaker, Coach Darin Slack was our QB specialist. Coach Slack created the famous self-correct system, the C4, as well as the R4 system which gives all QBs a faster and more methodical system to read Defence. For two days at each camp, Coach Slack worked with almost 40 QB’s on passing mechanics, how to read the game and most vitally how QBs can self-correct and self-improve using a variety of drills and training methods.
The second headline Coach was Greg Vandagriff. Coach Vandagriff is the Defensive Coordinator for the Woodward Academy in Atlanta, and like Coach Slack is also a speaker on the Glazier Clinic circuit, the largest and most prestigious clinic tour in the US. Whilst the QB’s were being coached on how to move the ball down the field, Coach Vandagriff worked the mix of Defensive Backs and Linebackers in pass coverage techniques, movement and tackling drills, and how to better communicate and work as a team.
Attendees across the two camps had wide range of talent levels and experience; with our youngest attendee being 11, and participants coming from youth, junior, flag and kitted football, including some great players from the booming women’s game, it posed a real challenge for coaches Slack and Vandagriff to get the message right. A feedback survey completed by attendees after the event, however, proved that they hit the nail on the head. The feedback was extremely positive; almost two thirds of respondents said the sessions had a perfect balance of complexity and new ideas and concepts, and over 80% saying the camp was “good, very good or tremendous value”. Attesting to this, 98% of attendees surveyed said they would be likely to attend again in future, and 78% said that they would definitely recommend the camp to a friend or teammate, meaning that there will certainly be more camps in future..
One coach who attended the QB camp with an observation spot said: “this event was a real success. I feel like I learned more (at least I understood it better) in a day than in 12 years in football. The video analysis section alone was worth the money. The coaches were hilarious and brilliant. Thanks to all who made this happen.” This was echoed by another coach who added: “overall (the) course has been excellent, my QB has improved already and the R4 is already helping WR’s, QB’s and coaches communicate without drastic changes to the playbook.”
Just like with the QB attendees, the comments were excellent, with one player attendee saying: “the event was brilliant, very informative and I think I’ve really developed my play and understanding of the game.”
Coach Slack said, “It was an honour to come over the UK to help develop the game further. Over the two camps it was brilliant to meet players from all areas of the game, from youth through to adults, flag players and both male and female athletes.”
Coach Vandagriff added, “Myself and Darin were delighted to see that 87% of attendees rated our presentation, delivery and coaching style as very good or excellent. We’re already looking forward to coming back next year to continue to help the UK game develop and to help players and coaches continue to grow as both athletes and as leaders.”
